2012-04-09 - International Romani Day was celebrated in Gothenburg on Sunday. At Gustaf Adolfs torg in the city centre, the Romani hymn Gelem gelem was played and the Romani flag was raised next to the Swedish.
“It feels fantastic; we have earned this after 500 years in Sweden. It makes me happy and proud,” said Nuri Selim to P4 Göteborg.
Bagir Kviek, chairman of the organisation Romer för kulturell utveckling (Romanis for cultural development), told P4 Göteborg that he thinks the situation of the Romani people in Sweden is improving.
“It’s finally on its way, there are really things happening for the Romani people. There’s an acceptance that hasn’t been shown before. And despite the unrest in Europe, Sweden is not there, Sweden is instead moving forward and looking forward and is doing something together with the Romani people.”
